If you want to grow hydrangeas for your garden or garden friends yourself, you don't even have to have a green thumb. Propagation by cuttings is e.g. dead easy.Hardly a flower is planted in a garden more than hydrangea. No wonder, because its rustic charm gives every garden a special flair. In addition, the hydrangea can be used in a variety of ways in the garden. Whether as a container plant, in a bed or as a hedge - the hydrangea is always ideal as a blob of flowers amidst green leaves. You can find their spherical shape, for example, especially in cottage gardens.
Once you have planted a hydrangea in the garden, you can usually not get enough of it. This is not a problem, because you can grow many other plants from a single hydrangea in no time. This is made possible by the propagation of cuttings, which usually works smoothly with hydrangeas. With a little skill, you can grow a sea of hydrangea flowers in a short time.
How to propagate hydrangeas through cuttings
1Cut off a few new shoots in July that are not yet woody and have no flower buds, and cut them into sections with a pair of leaves at the top and bottom. However, you have to cut off the lower leaves. On the other hand, cut the upper ones in the middle so that the cuttings in the growing pot do not take up as much space and the evaporation area is also reduced.
2 Now put the shoots a few centimeters deep in a pot with growing soil. This contains all the nutrients that the cuttings initially need to form roots. Then moisten the soil well and always make sure that the soil remains moist.
3Now the growing vessels still need a hood. Here it is sufficient if you simply cover the cuttings with some foil. The first fine roots then form in a shady spot in the garden after about 3 to 4 weeks. Then you can literally watch the cuttings getting bigger.
4If enough roots have formed, you can transplant the cuttings into small pots. The little plants no longer need a cover. In winter, however, you need to bring them indoors and put them in a cool place. Next spring you can plant the new hydrangea plants completely in the garden.
Hydrangeas need a lot of water. It is therefore important that you water them regularly. It is also important that you fertilize the hydrangeas regularly. Simply add a special hydrangea fertilizer to the irrigation water every two months.
